PTE Academic Essay Writing Tips for Students

Pearson Test of English, also known as PTE for short, is a computer-based exam for non-native English speakers that evaluates their speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency. It is accepted by more than 3,000 institutions worldwide as well as the UK, Australian, and New Zealand governments.

In order to pass this test, you need to successfully complete 20 tasks, one of which involves writing a 200-300 word essay from scratch. That’s a pretty big challenge even for experienced students with a great command of English. But don’t worry. We’re going to tell you how to ace this assignment with ease.

Read the prompt carefully

This is the first and most important step because if you miss some crucial details and start writing right away, you’ll be more likely to make mistakes and lose points. Plus, you’ll only have 20 minutes to write the essay, so there won’t be much time for editing. Here’s an example of an actual prompt that has been used for PTE tests:

“A company should concentrate on sales or reputations as long term strategies in the market. Discuss.”

Note that the wording can throw off some inattentive test takers because it’s phrased as a statement, when in fact, you’re supposed to take a side on the topic and argue for it.

Make a plan

Any expert writer will tell you that creating an outline for your paper helps significantly reduce editing time, which is very handy during a test when every second counts. Once you’ve read the prompt and decided which side of the argument you’re going to take, write down your ideas and arrange them into an outline. You’re supposed to have an introduction, the main body, and a conclusion. Considering that your essay should be somewhere between 200 and 300 words, it’s better to go for two body paragraphs if you’re aiming for a lower limit and three if you want to write more.

Start with the main body

It may seem counterintuitive, but it’s actually much easier to do the introduction after the body paragraphs when you’ve already written out the key arguments that support the main idea of your essay. You should have one paragraph for each point. The structure is very simple: the first topic sentence introduces the argument and is followed by supporting evidence, sub-arguments, or examples.

Now, write an introduction where you provide a brief overview of the topic and state the problem by rephrasing the prompt. It should end with a thesis statement expressing your position and including your key arguments. For instance:

“I believe companies should concentrate on building a positive reputation [position] because in doing so, they will attract more customers [argument 1] while investing less in marketing [argument 2].”

As for the conclusion, remember that the first sentence should tie back to your thesis statement and that this paragraph is basically a summary of the ideas expressed in your essay.

Show off your vocabulary

Words like “bad,” “good,” or “big” won’t do you any service. Your writing should come off as sophisticated but not too exaggerated. Try to be as precise as possible, avoiding words like “stuff” and “a long time.” Also, use synonyms instead of repeating the same words. Remember, the range of your vocabulary is one of the main factors that impact the quality of your essay.

Avoid contractions and slang

Remember, the PTE essay is a piece of formal academic writing, which comes with very specific rules. For instance, you can’t use contractions such as “we’re,” “I’ll,” “don’t,” etc., even though they’re acceptable for informal papers, such as newspaper, magazine, or online articles. Slang is also a big no-no, so avoid using any colloquial words or phrases.

You might want to do some research about the do’s and don’ts of academic writing if you’re completely new to it. A quick online search is all it takes to find a website with all the information you need. Alternatively, you can buy original papers from essay writing services such as CustomWritings and use them as examples of how to write academically. These companies can complete any assignment based on the instructions of each customer, so feel free to ask them for personalized assistance whenever you need it.

Check your draft

When the examiner reviews your PTE essay, they’re looking at your ability to fully answer the prompt within the prescribed word limits, as well as your grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and writing skills. Keep all this in mind when you review your paper before submitting it. It will help you make the necessary edits and corrections to improve the quality of your writing.

Practice before your test

We can’t stress this enough. Learning more about how the PTE exam works and taking time to prepare for it will really increase your chances of getting a high score. There are several ways to do this. For example, you can hire a PTE tutor. This test is so popular that there’s a special niche of teachers who help people study for it.

Or, you can use one of those custom essay services we’ve mentioned to get professional advice from experienced writers. All you have to do is send them some sample prompts and ask them to show you the best ways to complete them. Study these essays and take note of the writers’ techniques. A cheap solution would be to practice by yourself, set the timer for 20 minutes and start working on the prompt. After enough practice, you’ll be able to complete a perfect paper in such a short amount of time.

Final thoughts

It doesn’t matter if you’re taking PTE to apply to college in the USA, get an immigrant visa, or simply test your knowledge of English. Whatever the reason is, you should approach this exam very seriously. Take time to prepare for each task, especially the essay, which you’ll have to complete in only 20 minutes! You can use the tips in this article and seek advice from professionals to upgrade the quality of your writing. Remember, practice makes perfect, and as long as you work hard, you will surely get a top score.
